CoD - August '19 Game Day

Saturday (3rd August) was game day at Padstow Company of Dice (CoD).

Last month we had 6+ players (3 tables simultaneously). This month 5 players (plus some who had played previously but weren't rolling dice).

We had 3 tables secured and decorated, but based on lead-up chatter there was unlikely to be record numbers this time around.

3 games got played.

 - chaos marines vs marines
one vet player (chaos) vs a newer/returning recruit (marines).
our marine player made good use of the thunderhawk ferrying around terminators, and the chaos demon summoning was a learning experience.
the chaos warhounds (something of a rarity on the board in recent times) proved resilient and effective, toasting marines fairly consistently.
with objectives tied, the game ended in a draw on turn 3 - both players happy enough to call it quits and lunchtime.

Formations deployed and ready to roll (marines have formations in reserve - air drop)...

chaos player using a proxy (war machine i believe) chaos warhound titan. their intention is to kit-bash it to be a bit taller and more gribbly. the model itself is a great starting point for this project.

terminator party bus arrives...

lots of engage actions...

chaos terminators dropping behind the marines lines. from memory they managed to mash up the marine warhounds pretty good (one was destroyed when i looked over the table a little later).

 - vraksians vs krieg
a historic matchup if ever there was one (fiction appropriate).
the vraksians seemed to be struggling a bit with the gorgon blobs, especially in terms of direct confrontations. they did however pick away consistently at the krieg units, with salvos from 2 basilisk formations and a deathstrike.

opening phase, turn 1...

the krieg infantry was sporting new movement plates which made for far quicker disembark/embark.
the game closed out at the end of turn 4, failed to roll a turn 5 - and the vraksians won on points (killed more units than the krieg did).

 - krieg vs marines
this was an air assault only list for the marines, something different for the krieg player to experience.
marine aircraft harassed the krieg ground forces for turns 1 and 2 with limited success.
in turn 3 the strike cruiser arrived as did a brace of drop pods and thunderhawk troops.
the marines had some success assaulting krieg units but the majority of the kreig force were still combat capable and the marines atrophying.

krieg won 2:1 on turn 3 with take and hold and break their spirit objectives vs take and hold. (2 formations of terminators with chaplain - bts)

krieg setting up... as as the marines (all loaded up awaiting drop in turn 3)...

my new thunderhawks are really going to struggle in the narrow streets, and the stormbirds... forgedaboudit.

the krieg still had plenty of assets left at the end of turn 3 and would have rolled them across unanswered had the game continued. air assault is dramatic but definitely is neither unstoppable or particularly useful in all situations or for all opponents.

although the number of games played was still small (we don't start rolling dice until 10:30-11am) it was a successful day. lots of new rules and conditions were demonstrated and brought up.

the group is a fantastic collection of folk, where relaxed, casual games are generally valued over competition.

Until next time...
