Epic

aka: What's my headspace regarding this system...

[current token version - dec 2022]
Safe so say Epic isn't my cup of tea any longer.  Goes that way sometimes.

Love the scale, not a fan of the rest of it though.  I would play a) tournament, mainly to catch up with games folk,  b) specifically organised scenario  type days,  c) specifically organised "let's play this for old time sake" days,  d) wouldn't volunteer for casual pickup game unless someone specifically asked for a game.

consider: Chess is great because you start with the same stuff and there is no advantage/disadvantage, therefore if you play better/worse then you win/lose.
Overlay epic on chess... the faction I play is like, "We'll swap you rooks for knights, and you lose all your pawns, because that makes it 'flavourful'."   Well that sounds like it's interesting, however you eventually find that it puts you at a huge disadvantage before a single move is made.

I don't enjoy playing a game where I'm likely to lose before we even start. I went into last Cancon with the attitude of "managing losses," rather than "how many game can I win."

I'm not WAAC (win at all cost) by any means, but I think if you're going to be playing a tactical game there's not a lot of point unless your force is viable.
Otherwise you're just a token, whipping-boy participant/filler/fluffer for other people to practice against.
And if you have to rely on good dice for you, bad dice for your opponent, then that's actually gambling, not tactics.

Bottom line is,  I have other (potentially more enjoyably) game systems I can spend my hobby time on.

[current shell-shocked version]
Well, subsequent Covid didn't do anyone any favours (unless you're an incumbent politician or in pharmaceuticals). I've been to the meet about... 3 times in the last 3 years largely due to lockdowns, then the ongoing state-sanctioned discriminations, and then finally a 'well f@(# you too' petulant response. I may start going again more frequently as of... future now, but I've honestly not been particularly inspired to game a lot in general.

On a personal level, I can't say I'm in a place were I actually want to play Epic.  Similarly, there are people at CoD who can and will play (including me if I start up again) but like most long term game clubs and the members there of, we usually play a number of things, and may cycle around to Epic if and when the mood strikes again. It's not something that happens every month/meet and it's unlike to be that frequent, it's more likely to be a pre-planned event... or if someone new says they want to learn etc.

I find the game... not so much to my liking anymore.   I love the scale, I like (in general) probably the majority of the mechanics, I dislike 'tournament' rules as default, I dislike the imbalance of factions, I very much dislike predetermined results of tournaments - though I do like the event and the people.  That said I'd be willing to play a couple of tournaments again, for the atmosphere, if not for the game. It's not a bad game, it's just not a game for me... at the moment anyway.

[old grateful version]
It's been well over a year since we had our first games of Epic at Company of Dice (Padstow)... tried looking through the posts and my game diary pics but couldn't find exactly when the first session was.  I think maybe November 2018 based on other info from around that time.

An-ny-ways. Despite covid shutting down our social scene for some months we had out first games day back last Saturday. Everyone was super keen to get back into it.      We have a fairly consistent core of players, not huge numbers but we can consistently get 4-6 people playing.    Often there are others playing other games on the day... such is the nature of the club.

AT is getting a bit of a look in at the moment, and it's a good crossover point for Epic.

[older optimistic version]
While Sydney's Epic scene is tiny (like a 6mm gretchin) there are now a few players congregating regularly, which is encouraging.

After a few months off Epic moved from Campbelltown to the Company of Dice meet (1st saturday of the month) in Padstow and this has really helped numbers.
Last session (July 2019) we had 3 tables playing simultaneously... do the maths and that's 6 players all Epicing at once!!  in Sydney!!  whoo hoo!!    Plus there's more folk who have played over the last couple months too (other games to play or real life etc).
CoD is people meeting up specifically to roll dice and talk BS which is better bait then trying to inspire interest from random shop front walk ins (with all due respect and thanks to HoH of course).

Anyway it seems this might be right place at the right time.

I'm kinda hoping to perhaps hit up the CoD West Ryde locale at some stage as well but these things evolve when and where they will.

Most games and sessions (amongst this particular group of course) are coordinated via fb.
Australia has a local group which is generally a bunch of helpful, knowledgeable and friendly folk.

[even older pessimistic version] Sydney's Epic scene is tiny like a 6mm gretchin; not overly surprising for an officially unsupported game but none-the-less a little disappointing.

There are a few active players scattered side-to-side and top-to-bottom across Sydney.  Nearby Newcastle boasts probably the strongest Epic scenes in the land.

At the current time (2017-2018) a couple of us are playing regularly at the Hall of Hero's hobby/games store in Campbelltown, NSW.

We meet on the second Sunday of each month, so the anticipated dates for 2018 'Epic days' are...
- Jan 14
- Feb 11
- Mar 11
- Apr 8
- May 13
- Jun 10
- Jul 8
- Aug 12

- Sep 9- Oct 14
- Nov 11
- Dec 9

Subject to change... specifically if everyone will be at a tournament etc.

The best place to see discussions re this is wargamerau forum (GW large scale games) forum.
It may be difficult getting a login (most epic forums make the process... tiresome, generally quoting 'spam').
Possibly the most direct route is via the folk at Hall of Heros, who are good folk.
