Finally got these done.
Using a false deadline i managed to put in the sessions required to get them off the painting desk. Yhay!!
We had out local game day at Padstow on Saturday. First one since the 2020 disease debacle. Although i wasn't going to be using them i had mentioned to someone that i'd bring them so they could see them. And rode that motivation for all it was worth!!
Anyway, the last coat of colour went on at about 5:30 the morning of (though i did finish off clear coats after the event).
This is very first time with all models out on display. Far less there than the Templars - probably a little more than the Custodes - as comparison to recent, previous projects.
Am reasonably happy with the end result. There are certainly ugly spots if you look close up, but my painting technique kind of disguises some of that, and at gaming distance they're perfectly acceptable. As a force, as opposed to single models, there's enough uniformity to work. The only think that slightly bugs me is that the model scales/styles are slightly unhomogeneous - by this i mean some of the models are a bit more detailed, others are slightly more plain - but again, from gaming distance [shrug].
So a quick run down of the (mainly) new models done since last update...
From this...
to this... Mortarion, Primach of the Death Guard.
Nice to have versions of the Storm Eagle model completed. After seeing several other people post up completed pics of the model it's nice to have my own done too. Nice that people are using the model as well.
Standard Land Speeders. I was actually hoping to use some of the 30k-ified versions but couldn't find anything until long after printing was done. didn't feel like redoing stuff. Pretty happy with how these turned out.
Same Xiphons as used by the Templars and Custodes. I actually contemplated printing a couple of Thunderbolts... as well as these... just cos the models are great and i don't actually have any resin ones as yet. These will do for now.
The 30k version/shape bikes. Happy with these.
Spartan Transports. These are someone else's model and they're great. Terminator will probably be booting around the board in these.
Typhon tanks by the same modeller as the Spartans. Again, great model. The inclusion of these in the army was actually a gaming buddies idea and i like the firepower variety they can add.
Speaking of Terminators... These were actually a remodel specifically for this project. Based on the existing ones of course but with slightly different... chassis shape. Not that anyone would actually notice.
The Death Shroud Terminators. There are two squads worth more or less. One full squad operating in the own right and one assigned as Mortarion's 'body guard'. Technically they are regular Terminator based on the list (can only take one squad of Death Shroud limitation). Anyway Terminators can also be transported using the Storm Eagles.
Regular ol Tactical marines. I modelled these up ages ago because someone requested them, but this was my first time printing them for my own armies. Quite happy with how they turned out (as in the colours etc).
Dreadnoughts. Found a nice set of files for these on thingiverse and whipped up two of each. I have 3 formations of Tacticals available, and although i have more than enough transport models they tend to be expensive. More than likely one set of Tacs will be a 'Blitz Guard' (sit at the back of the board and protect the Blitz objective) and i'll attach a dreadnought or two to increase the formation's firepower.
And that... is that.
Normally 30k is played with 4,000 pts (up from 3,000 pts of regular Epic). The army contains more than enough units for 4k, plus there are a few different options available so i'm not stuck with just one list. Mainly just small tweaks... Spartans or Storm Eagles... Typhons or Sicarians... Speeders or Bikes... for example. Again, i was never aiming for multiples of everything available, like the Templar project had.
Looking forward to a game with them, hopefully not to far from now but given how many games we have available, who knows when they'll see the board for real.
Am yet to magnetise the bases which i will be doing, but they will be permanently housed in a Modifx bag. Need to work out what size i need etc.
Update: 2020-07-09
Turns out yesterday was magnet day.
I have a paper guillotine thingy which is capable of cutting the magnetic sheets. They're A4 size, from officeworks and probably the same toughness as thick cardboard though softer. No issue cutting them and it's a clean cut. I have wooden blocks which i use for templates to get a consistent size.
superglue magnet chunk then stick to base. avoid super-gluing fingers too much.
Viola. Those are now 'attached' to a metal covered mdf tray.
Now i need to get a modifx bag to store them. at least this time i have such a bag to accurately work out how many foam trays will be required.
Update: 2020-07-09 - part 2
Turns out they happened to have the necessary foam AND bag at my FLGS.
Like DONE done.
Update: 2020-09-22
Printed up some bag badges for the Death Guard (left) and Custodes (right). Quick paint job and ready to roll.
update ends
Update: 2020-10-12
On a whim (a while back) i ordered some Death Guard Dice. Finally arrived.
And, stored in the box...
update ends
Until next time...
